 Talking toilets !!
Anyone out there with an Envirolet toilet? What happens if you leave the boat with no power to it for any time?

 Re: Talking toilets !!
Harvest on the sub-forum, "Harvest - a boat for all seasons" has an Envirolet toilet but Paul hasn't fitted it yet. I'll ask him.

 Re: Talking toilets !!
It's a composting toilet! Apparantly (look away if you are eating breakfast!) the fluids evaporate off, and whats left decomposes to soil, that you riddle out. Apparantly they only need emptying every 9 months. But it needs heat - from your electric supply, hence the question!! Sounds great instead of the cassettes and the pump outs / listing etc..!!
PS Thanks NB Willawaw, any help is gratefully received.

 Re: Talking toilets !!
I have e-mailed Paul Chapman who owns Harvest. In the meantime, I checked their website and it says for the AC mains version:
WHEN THE SYSTEM IS IN USE It is recommended that anytime your EnviroletĀ® System is going to be in use that both the Fans and Heater be on.
SYSTEM LEFT FOR UP TO 2 WEEKS If the system is going to be left for up to 2 weeks, the system should be switched to Fans Only operation (by using the 2-position neon or toggle switch, depending on the model, located on the Top Panel).
SYSTEM LEFT FOR MORE THAN 2 WEEKS If the system is going to be unused for more than 2 weeks, the unit can be completely shut off/unplugged.
The 12V system would appear to be the favourable option for a narrowboat and the supply could be derived from solar panels (0.6A drain), but it appears you need the revolving cowl vent (could be noisy ?) and I heard from another boater that you need a hand pump attachment to separate the liquid from the solids as there is no evaporation heater on the 12 V model ? their website doesnt appear to mention this ???

 Re: Talking toilets !!
Great !! - and there's me been trawling their site, and couldn't find it !! Many thanks. I think there is a 12 / 240v unit as well, that seemed a good idea for a narrow boat, as it would switch "down" the power for times when it's on its own! Don't like the idea of a swivel cowl on the roof - that will spoil lines of a nice boat very quickly!! I was / am hoping that it can be disguised as a stove chimney!! Before long you could have a boat sprouting chimneys everywhere! Thanks for the research....

 Re: Talking toilets !!
Well an interesting one that. I am also intrigued. Watch this space as they say. I imagine what would happen is that the decomposeing of the material just slows down as the temperature drops which should not be a problem as no new material would be added. We shall see! NB Willawaw wrote:

 Re: Talking toilets !!
Thanks Harvest - would like to keep up with your "experiment" once you have fitted it if possible.. I'm in design stage at the moment - and would need to leave a bigger space for the Envirolet!! But it seems a good idea! Thanks

 Re: Talking toilets !!
I know this topic was a couple of months ago but I have only just joined!
I am very interested in this idea and hate our current (inherited) chemical porta loo thing. We don't want a pump out toilet either.
Can someone explain the sort of dimensions we are talking about, both the toilet unit itself and the holding tank? Does it work by putting sawdust down as the 'on land' sort do? I was a bit concerned about the electric requirements when the boat is unattended as we always disconnect ours as we are (perhaps unreasonably) paranoid about electrical fires whist she is unattended.
Our bathroom needs a complete revamp at some point so planning at this stage would be good.

 Re: Talking toilets !!
They are quite big, but need no tank - all storage is internal. See my post above about using solar power to run the toilet with a couple of big panels ?

Hey - hiya ej! The enviro loo does need constant power. From my research so far, if you switch it off comletely, it's likely to smell after a while. I'm not convinced they are great unless yours is a live aboard. There is a 12v version that might help, that runs the same as a fridge. They are larger than "normal" loos and potti's - about 3 foot wide from memory, so your refurbished bathroom needs to be planned around it. I'm struggling to fit one in unless I have a through bathroom - something I wasn't so keen on initially. Anyway be interested in seeing how you do on this. regards
